Welcome to the Ladyvale Blog!

Updated: May 7, 2019

Welcome to the Ladyvale blog and our very first post! With the launch of our new premises happening so soon, it’s great to be able to look back and see how far we’ve come since my husband David and I took over the Woods Café at Cardinham in 2009.

Growing up in Cornwall and loving baking, it was a dream come true at 21 to run the Woods Café, which is nestled in beautiful Cardinham Woods. We love being a family business; in fact, David and I found out the café was going to be ours the day before we got married! We lived above the café for the first 5 years, moving in during November 2009. They were humble beginnings - to start with, I was the only employee and I made everything from scratch: cakes, chutneys, scones – you name it, I made it.

As we’ve expanded, we’ve been honoured to win some lovely awards along the way – we won Best Café in Cornwall 2018 from Muddy Stilettos, Best Tearoom/Coffeeshop 2014 from Cornwall Life, and Clipper Tea’s first ever Cosiest Café in 2017! We’ve also had a few recipes published in Waitrose Magazine, the Great Cornish Food Book and myCornwall magazine.

There were also some challenges along the way – in 2010 we were flooded during the extreme winter weather, and had to close for 4 months while we repaired the café. While we were closed we bought a yurt to do weddings, but once the café re-opened we had to sell it again because the café had become so busy!

Over the course of the last ten years, a lot’s changed – our family’s grown (we had our baby girl, Lowen, and not long after, Fionn, our little boy) – and so has the business! We moved out of where we lived above the café, and started Ladyvale, our celebration and occasion bakery, a separate business in 2016. Everything is still hand-made on-site at the Woods Café - but we now employ 20 people to keep up with how busy we’ve become.

The bakery is my passion; I love the natural beauty of our surroundings, and it just made sense to explore that with the edible flowers I grow in my kitchen garden – but more on that in a later post! I’d been making celebration and wedding cakes at the café - but, you guessed it, now we’ve ran out of space at the café again!

So we’re giving Ladyvale Bakery a new home in beautiful Nansledan in Newquay. We’re so excited to be picking up the keys this week – and we can’t wait to welcome you to the new premises! We’ll be opening in June so watch out for an announcement – and you’ll be able to become a member of our brand new Cake Club, with exclusive offers for all you cake lovers out there. Watch this space – it’s going to be exciting!

If you love cake, or know someone who does, Ladyvale Bakery needs to be on your bucket list! Bring on the #tiersofjoy
